A new perspective (plus, painting progress!)

“All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better” Ralph Waldo Emerson

As Isaac spends more time awake during the day, I’ve had to get more creative about when / how I can get work done.

Even if you haven’t gone through this very stage we’re in right now, the experience translates: the sweetest, most tender moments of life matched with moments of complete exhaustion. I haven’t found my new normal yet (he’s only 3 months – I know I need to be patient with myself!), but we’ll get there. Thank you for taking the journey with me.

Here we are practicing in a wrap so I can work standing up while he sleeps:

Even though I’ve only had a little time to paint recently, progress is still progress! First, Eric and I continued to experiment with changing the existing paintings into stickers. Here’s Isaac modeling month 3 as a 4″ vinyl sticker, though the colors are more saturated than they look here. Time for some tweaking!

Once I saw the photo of month 3, I decided I need to do more work on the painting. I felt frustrated at first since I’d love to move forward with this project quickly and I have such limited time to paint as it is, but here’s the truth: taking the time to tweak what’s not working instead of pushing forward just to be done is always a creatively healthy thing,

Experimentation is such an important part of any process and usually when I go back to fix something I end up happy with the change. I’m going to trust my gut reaction that there’s more work to do so check back for an updated month 3!

I also had a little time this past weekend to move forward with months 7 and 8. Here I am working at my parents’ house while my mom hung out with Isaac for a bit:

And here’s month 7 after I finished working:

I’m not done 8 yet, but here’s the progress so far:

More to come! Stay tuned.

The past few weeks have brought a new perspective as we move closer to fall. I feel like I’ve been holding my breath the entire summer, so many new experiences and worries competing for attention that I’ve felt totally depleted. My goal as we enter into a new season is to remember this:

Our lives unfold with divine timing.

Every mistake is simply an experience worth learning from, and it’s okay to create space for rest. Focus is key. My life and work are unfolding exactly as they should, and this time I choose to believe it. Trust, release, breathe and renew.

Now repeat.

With love,

Elizabeth McDonnell
